Both dogs and wolves are subspecies of Canis lupus. The one lives to grace our hearth, the other to haunt our dreams. The one represents fidelity and the most loyal of servants. the other the force of the wild nature we wish to tame. This design is a classic meeting of the two sides of canine nature, as an infinity symbol, Mobius band of duality.

The mathematical symbol for infinity is called the lemniscate. The infinity sign was devised in 1655 by mathematician John Wallis, and named lemniscus (latin, ribbon) by mathematician Bernoulli about forty years later. The religious aspect of the infinity symbol predates its mathematical origins. Similar symbols have been found in Tibetan rock carvings; and the ouroboros, or infinity snake, is often depicted in this shape. In the tarot, it represents the balance of forces and is often associated with the magician card.

When I asked him to provide me with reference material of designs that resonated with him, he sent examples of the splendid tattoo art of Aman Durga Sipatiti. This inspirational Sarawak Borneo art is filled with spiral forms, so similar to the Pictish and Celtic patterns I love. It was a pleasure to look at them as I created this custom piece.
